Hello Neptuners.
While working in the shop yesterday I had a customer ask about DC Comics and their newest story line for the month of September called Villains Month. In talking with the customer he inquired if anyone else has said anything about wanting to get these books when they come out in September. My response was surprisingly “no”. So, that got me to thinking, why haven’t I heard anything from other customers about this? Maybe no one really knows about it, maybe I haven’t talked about it at all with customers, maybe no one really cares. Whatever the reason I decided to write a little something about this.
In the month of September DC is going to publish 52 books, each will spotlight a major villain in the DC Universe. While the August books will have the regular numbering, September will have a point system. For example Batman will be #23.1 Joker, 23.2 Riddler, 23.3 Penguin, 23.4 Bane. Not every series will have 4 books under them some may only have 2 books like Earth 2. Plus not every series will have a villains book that month, for example Catwoman, and Suicide Squad will not be published for the month of September.
So why will you want to get these books? Well, in a bit of nostalgia DC is making each one of these books with a special lenticular cover. I know you’re saying “What? Didn’t they do that back in the 90’s? What makes these so special?” Well, in speaking with a rep from DC Comics he assured me that this has never been done before and the covers look AMAZING. With that said I spoke to a couple of retailers who have seen a prototype of these covers and they agree that these covers are going to be something special. From what I understand it that the effect is the whole cover not just one little piece right in the middle.
Now here comes the important part of this conversation. DC has already set the print runs on these books before we (retailers) have even put in our orders. Plus, I’ve been told by my DC source that all the books will be allocated so that no one shop can corner the market on these books. With that being said there is a good chance that some retailers will under order on some of these titles and there will be a demand out there for these books.
