Win, Win, Win! Why SKYPEHYPE is a 3-way Win.

Win, Win, Win! Why SKYPEHYPE is a 3-way Win.

Having a store in a city that is not New York, LA, or Chicago makes it tough to get talent to come and do in store signings. The main problem for a store is the cost. It costs the store to pay for the talent to travel (airfare, hotel, meals). Then there are some people who charge an appearance fee to sit in the store. Stores hope to recoup the cost of all that with increased sales of related merchandise. In order to do that the store has to advertise the event – at an additional cost. I speak from experience when I say that making any profit on these events is really, really hard to do. In most situations the best a store does is break even. At best! But most of the time the store takes a loss, chalks it up to making customers happy, and maybe ends up with a new customer.
I’ve always believed that the comic book store experience should include being able to meet and talk to comic book creators. Up until recently the only way to accomplish that would be an in store appearance and I’ve already explained the challenges of that. But with today’s technology we can now have creators “stop by” Neptune Comics virtually and tell us why we should buy their books, find out what is happening with their favorite characters, and just shoot the sh*…. . I call it SKYPEHYPE.
What is SKYPEHYPE? It’s a new way to have customers interact with a comic book creator in their own back yard, or their favorite comic book shop. A comic book shop can SKYPEHYPE with a creator and that creator gets to hangout with customers for a little awhile.
What are some of the benefits for Customers, Creators, and Retailers?

Customers:
1. Get to meet the person who writes and or draws their favorite character on a daily basis.
2. Find out what it takes to get into comics.
3. Find out where a story might lead to.
4. Find out what that creator is doing next.
5. Laugh or cry or geek-out or just have fun for an hour while hanging out in the sanctuary of their favorite comic book shop.
Creators:
1. Don’t have to travel.
2. Meet fans. Face-to-face marketing at no cost and in a much more comfortable chair than you get at a con.
3. Get paid more. Don’t have to spend so much time sitting at an airport waiting for a connecting flight but instead spend that time working – and hopefully getting paid for it.
4. Can drink, smoke, wear PJ’s and not brush your teeth and no one will ask you to leave.

Retailers:
1. Low cost. Just set up a computer with a webcam and you are set.
2. Keep the customers coming back for more, or introduce customers to other creators they might not know of. Maybe sell an extra comic book or two while you’re at it.
3. Be known as the most connected, awesome, techno-savvy hub of geek-dome on the planet!

The other night my store Neptune Comics hosted its very first SKYPEHYPE. While attendance was low, it was one of the best events Neptune Comics has ever put on. Comic book stores are known for being places where people can hang out and “talk shop.” SKYPEHYPE takes it to a new level. When Neptune Comics hosted Steve Niles we really didn’t know what to expect. Mid-way through I could just tell that it was a great way to connect our customers and myself as both a fan and a retailer with creators. We talked with Steve about the state of the industry for a bit, what he has on his creative plate, and even talked a while about John Carpenter movies. Point is everyone had fun. My hope is to host a creator SKYPEHYPE weekly as long as there is interest from creators and customers. If all the SKYPEHYPE’s are like the one last night we are doing them for a long time. If you get a chance please try to attend one of these as they go on, and let me know how you liked it. We’re planning them weekly on Wednesday night around 6 pm, so you can stop in and pick up your comics and/or hang out and join in on the SKYPEHYPE at Neptune Comics.
Thank you to Steve Niles for being our first SKYPEHYPE. It was great talking with you. We look forward to having you SKYPEHYPE with us again in the future.  Our next guests will be Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner on Wednesday August 21st at 6 pm.

What you need to know about DC Comics and the Month of Evil!

Hello Neptuners.

While working in the shop yesterday I had a customer ask about DC Comics and their newest story line for the month of September called Villains Month.  In talking with the customer he inquired if anyone else has said anything about wanting to get these books when they come out in September.  My response was surprisingly “no”.  So, that got me to thinking, why haven’t I heard anything from other customers about this?  Maybe no one really knows about it, maybe I haven’t talked about it at all with customers, maybe no one really cares.  Whatever the reason I decided to write a little something about this.

In the month of September DC is going to publish 52 books, each will spotlight a major villain in the DC Universe.  While the August books will have the regular numbering, September will have a point system.  For example Batman will be #23.1 Joker, 23.2 Riddler, 23.3 Penguin, 23.4 Bane.  Not every series will have 4 books under them some may only have 2 books like Earth 2.  Plus not every series will have a villains book that month, for example Catwoman, and Suicide Squad will not be published for the month of September.

So why will you want to get these books?  Well, in a bit of nostalgia DC is making each one of these books with a special lenticular cover.  I know you’re saying “What? Didn’t they do that back in the 90’s? What makes these so special?”  Well, in speaking with a rep from DC Comics he assured me that this has never been done before and the covers look AMAZING.  With that said I spoke to a couple of retailers who have seen a prototype of these covers and they agree that these covers are going to be something special.  From what I understand it that the effect is the whole cover not just one little piece right in the middle.

Now here comes the important part of this conversation.  DC has already set the print runs on these books before we (retailers) have even put in our orders.  Plus, I’ve been told by my DC source that all the books will be allocated so that no one shop can corner the market on these books.  With that being said there is a good chance that some retailers will under order on some of these titles and there will be a demand out there for these books.

We want all of you loyal Neptuners to get one if you want one.  Subscribers to titles that will have the special issues will automatically receive these additional comics unless you tell us otherwise.  For example, if Batman is one of your titles we will reserve all 4 books that month.
If you are not a subscriber but want to receive copies of these special issues you need to do one of the following: come in and tell us, call and ask, email neptunecomics@sbcglobal.net and ask or go to our website and pre-order what you want:  http://neptunecomics.com/store/category/27/583/DC-Comics/ .  The links for all of the Villans Months books are there and available for pre-order.
Because there is a good chance that these issues will be allocated to stores the best way to make sure you get the special issue copies you want is to pre-order them either with a subscription or pre-order online.  We can’t guarantee how many extra shelf copies of these comics we will have available and my guess is they will sell out quickly across the country and here at Neptune.
Below is a full list of all the titles that are being offered with links to our website for easy ordering. Let us know right away so you don’t miss out!

MarvelNow Party and FREE Arrow Comic book!

October 10th was already going to be a big day in the shop cause we are going to have a party for the start of MarvelNOW and the release of Uncanny Avengers #1.  However, DC wanted in on the action as is doing the following for everyone who comes into Neptune Comics on October 10th.

OCTOBER 10 DECLARED ‘ARROW DAY’ AT COMIC BOOK RETAILERS ACROSS THE U.S.

Free ARROW Comic Book Offered on Premiere Day of Warner Bros. Television’s All-New Show ‘ARROW,’ Airing Wednesdays at 8/7c on The CW

DC Entertainment and comic book retailers across America have deemed Wednesday, October 10 “Arrow Day” to celebrate the arrival of Warner Bros. Television’s highly anticipated new show ARROW, airing Wednesdays at 8/7c on The CW. Fans who visit their local comic book retailer on October 10 will receive a free ARROW #1 SPECIAL EDITION custom comic book that is the perfect companion for the show’s premiere that night.

The ARROW #1 SPECIAL EDITION offers a past and present glimpse of hotshot billionaire Oliver Queen. And as an added bonus, readers will get a six-page preview of GREEN ARROW #0, highlighting the DC Comics character who inspired the new show. In addition to the free comic, DC Entertainment is also providing comic retailers with ARROW promotional posters and bags.

U.S. retailers will receive the ARROW #1 SPECIAL EDITION in quantities equal to their orders at FOC of JUSTICE LEAGUE #0 (JUL120123), along with a $.05 per copy freight credit.

“ARROW is one of the most highly-anticipated new shows premiering this fall and when you combine that with enthusiasm from comic book fans who now get to see one of their favorite Super Heroes on TV – there’s a lot of excitement comic book retailers can tap into,” stated DC Entertainment Vice President of Marketing, John Cunningham. “We’re thrilled to bring ‘Arrow Day’ to fans across the country.”

In addition to the free custom comic available at comic book retailers, on October 10 fans can also download the first chapter of the new ARROW digital comic book series written by show Executive Producers Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg. Legendary GREEN ARROW comic book writer and artist Mike Grell is on board to draw the first two covers, and Sergio Sandoval and Jorge Jimenez have been tapped to do artwork in subsequent chapters. The weekly series will also be collected in print with three digital chapters on sale in one print issue starting on November 28.

The ARROW premiere celebration doesn’t end on October 10. ARROW will be present at New York Comic Con in a big way, with a special video presentation and cast/producer Q&A in the IGN Theater on Sunday, October 14 at 11am. The panel will be followed by a signing at the DC Entertainment booth #1238 at 12:30pm.

I hope we see all of you on October 10 its going to be huge!

Marvel Now! And What We Know.

I was invited to join a bunch of retailers from around the country yesterday on a conference call with some of the Sales and editorial staff at Marvel.  They wanted to give us retailers some more information on what exactly is Marvel Now!

First up was talking about Uncanny Avengers.  They (Marvel) wanted us to know that Uncanny Avengers is for both fans of Avengers and the X-men franchises.  For years Marvel has kept the two properties separate from each other.  Meaning one did not mingle with the other.  Now both will be dancing together for the foreseeable future.  Marvel did say that this is the BIG kickoff book.  This will be the flagship title in the Marvel Universe.

Also, Marvel wanted us to know that this whole Marvel Now! was NOT a reboot.  Everything that you know about the Marvel Universe will remain intact.  However, if you wanted to start reading something new this would be a great time to start.  Also, a lot of titles are being relaunched with new #1 issues, however there are a number of titles that will remain on their current numbering system and will see no change in the future.  What exactly those titles are I don’t know as we didn’t have time to go into it.  One they mentioned was Journey Into Mystery.  Things will be changing in the book just the numbering will remain the same.  Marvel also said that they know the schedule of their books through March of next year.  They will release other #1’s in that time and other changes for other books, but it is planned out till March.

There was also a lot of talk about a one shot book called “Marvel Now! Point One” this book  will be a $5.99 book and will have over 50 pages of brand new content.  Also, this will not just be “preview” book taking pages from issue one of certain books.  It will have 6 all new stories that will build up to the launch of the #1 issues of their books.  If you need some reference on what they are talking about look at Marvel Point One that came out last year that built up what became Avengers Vs X-men.
Marvel also liked the success of AVX mini series that has been going on in the Marvel U.  This book is a 6 issue mini series that pit 2 groups of individual characters against each other in each book.  Well, Marvel is going to continue that book but call it A+X.  So, if you like to see the biggest superhero characters go at it you will want to pick this up.
I hope this article gave you a little more insight in what is happening in the Marvel U.  If you want to add any titles to your pull list, or start a pull list just let us know we will be happy to help you.
